Newborn Lip Blister: Its Causes And Treatment

Newborn lip blister, how do they occur, and what can do to treat them? Have you ever noticed bump on baby’s lip? Let us see here. Tiny bumps on the lips filled with fluid are called blisters. Lip blisters are normal in the newborn as he is learning to latch. It gets healed on its own. It is not a serious threat.

 

Causes Of Newborn Lip Blister

  • It may cause due to friction in sucking while having a mother’s milk. They are also known as suck blisters or friction blisters. You can also say milk blister on baby’s lip or newborn sucking blister.  It can cause by vigorous sucking action. It can also see in bottle-fed babies.
  • The next cause will be cold sores. It is also called a fever blister caused by the virus Herpes simplex. They commonly occur in adults and older kids. Don’t kiss the baby if you are infected or have an active sore. The herpes virus can cause dangerous infections in your newborn.
  • Sometimes can cause as a result of an allergic reaction. Your baby may be allergic to ingredients in lotions, creams, or lip balm. Sometimes food allergies can also cause blisters.
  • Infection caused by Staphylococcus or Streptococcus bacteria may cause blisters on the baby’s lips and around the mouth.
  • Oral thrush due to the overgrowth of fungus causes baby lip blisters. White patches may appear on the tongue, cheeks, and roof of the mouth. These are also known as white blisters on a baby’s lip.

 

Indications of Newborn Lip Blister

A blister is a liquid bump that appears on the lips of the baby. It can burst and leak and the baby can have trouble eating.

How do they appear in other signs?

  • A slight swelling on the upper lip
  • Chapped-like a little peeling of the lip
  • A large single blister in the middle of the upper lip
  • You can also blisters on both the lips upper and lower

Blisters due to Mothers feeding will not possess serious symptoms. But with the blisters caused by an infection, you can notice associated symptoms.

What are the symptoms are;

  • Blister spit smelly fluid
  • Tiredness
  • Fever
  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Soreness
  • White patches due to oral thrush.

 

Newborn Lip Blister Treatment

If the blisters are due to mothers feeding blisters or sucking blisters, it requires no special treatment, it can heal on their own. By establishing a good latch with the advice of a lactation consultant, you can treat a sucking blister.

For bottle-fed babies;

  • Use the feeding bottle in the correct position. Make sure the bottle nipple is completely into the baby’s mouth and not straining their lips.
  • You can use paced feeding for a comfortable sucking speed.
  • Make sure the size of the bottle nipple is suitable for your baby’s age and development.

For infectious blisters like cold sore blisters, you can follow some treatments to heal them.

Treatments include;

  • Mothers feed regularly to keep them hydrated
  • Use a cool or warm washcloth to reduce the pain.
  • Avoid giving acidic foods like lemon juice, tomatoes, and other citrus fruits to food-eating babies.
  • Use pain relievers
  • Apply cold sore lip balms or creams
  • You can moisturize your baby lip by rubbing a few drops of olive oil or coconut oil
  • Impetigo Infection – See your doctor and follow proper protocols for medication and treatment.

If you find any serious symptoms see your doctor immediately and get prescribed and heal your little one’s lip. Be cautious with the following symptoms.

  • Sores near the eyes
  • Swelling on the skin
  • Seizers
  • High fever
  • Breathing trouble
  • Blue skin
  • Bleeding
  • Yellow eyes

Visit the doctor as soon as possible and take the necessary treatment.

 

Conclusion

If your newborn gets a lip blister from the mother’s feed, it can heal on its own after a few weeks or months.  If it is virus-infected blisters or has other symptoms, doesn’t wait for healing on its own. Get prescriptions from your doctor and treat your newborn lip blister.
